A Village Hall Trust was established in 1939 with the Parish Council administering its affairs until Swell Village Hall Committee came into being on 5th July 1994 when the Charity Commission approved it as a registered charity. Since that time, succeeding Committees have run the Village Hall's affairs and maintained its infrastructure through ongoing fundraising and community involvement.
It takes an average of £5,000 a year to generally maintain the Hall with programmes of ongoing remedial work also taking place. In 2016, water ingress and damp required significant ground works and the replacement of damaged flooring. In 2017, new heating and LED lighting were installed together with a new cooker & dishwasher. The Hall roof was also surveyed. In early 2018, the Hall is to be completely re-decorated. All this work is very expensive & requires a great deal of ongoing fundraising effort from Committee members & supporters alike. In 2017, this was reflected in a full round of fundraising activities including weekly Coffee Mornings, a Wine Tasting, Film Club, Big Breakfasts, Fete, Cotswold School Car Parking, Valuation Day, Quiz Night, Hot Fingers Concert and 100 Club.
We work very closely with St. Mary's Church & Lower Swell Primary School and on 9th June 2018 the three of us will be holding a much bigger Fete than previously, with many exhibitors from a wide area participating. More details will appear on the website later, but it is a very exciting prospect and one that we are all really looking forward to. Also in 2018, our plans to date include the weekly Coffee Mornings, the Spring & Autumn Film Club, a Spring Valuation Day, an Autumn Wine Tasting, a Big Breakfast and the provision of refreshments at Chastleton Church on certain days.
As always, we are looking for people to join the Committee or to register as a supporter. At present, the Chairman is Diane Cresswell, email@example.com, the treasurer is Alison Giovannetti, firstname.lastname@example.org and Donna Graham, email@example.com, organises bookings for the hire of the Hall.
We currently don't have a secretary but Diane would be happy to have a chat with anyone who would consider joining us in this role.
We have a great deal of fun and enjoy real camaraderie as members and supporters of Swell Village Hall Committee. Much of what we do is designed to actively support the maintenance of the Village Hall and our local community and with the help of the Parish Council, the Church and the School, that is exactly what we do.
